Money transfer service providers Safaricom have entered into a partnership with Forward Travelers Sacco to provide cashless options of paying fares.
According to Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa, the options will be immediately available for 70 matatus from the Sacco using Kagundo Road, Juja Road and Malaa routes. It will however bring in other 400 matatus plying Manyanja road.
“M-PESA is increasingly becoming a preferred way to pay and collect fare for commuters and matatus. It has therefore become necessary to partner with the matatu sector to provide them with solutions that make it easy to collect and reconcile payments empowering them to efficiently run their businesses,” said Ndegwa.
The desire to have a cashless payment of fare will provide matatu owners with the opportunity to monitor daily reports of fare collected.
