One Dead, 10 Arrested In A Botched Rescue In Ilegal Sugar Traders In Kakamega

One person has been confirmed dead as 10 others were arrested as they were trying to rescue their colleagues who were arrested after they were found with over 400 bags of uncustomed sugar.

DCI revealed that the lorry which was detained at the Chwele Police Station was being escorted to Kisumu under tight security by DCI detectives and CIPU officers were attacked by the suspects who were trying to rescue their colleagues.

“Over 20 vehicles and an unknown number of motorcycles whose number plates were concealed were used to barricade the road at Makunga shopping Centre, with the gang attempting to seize the consignment and free the suspects,” Said DCI.

One officer was attacked by the gang and left with serious injuries on the chest and limbs.

“Luckily, a contingent of police officers from Kakamega that was headed to Chwele reinforced the officers, restoring sanity and helping in the arrest of the suspects,”  Kinoti said.

The arrested suspects are Evans Ariko 22, Geoffrey Ikasalion 28, Dan Oure 23, Thomas Ekisa 24, Isaac Etyang 21, Sammy Oloo 22, David Otieno 27, Simon Ogema 24, Kelvin Kasala 21 and Winnie Muriuki, 22.

Three vehicles and a motorbike were impounded from the attack.

The suspects are currently being processed at the Kakamega Police Station awaiting to be arraigned today.
