Busia County sex workers have urged the government to include them in the priority list of those who will benefit from the first butch of the COVID- 19 vaccine.
Kenya received 1.02 million doses of the vaccine through the global COVAX facility on Wednesday with first beneficiaries targeting frontline workers such as health care professionals, teachers and security personnel.
However, the chairman of Busia commercial sex workers, Caroline Kemunto, argue that they should be included in that least as they are at high risk.
“After the government is done vaccinating doctors and teachers, it should embark on vaccinating us,” Kemunto said.
“We are a high-risk group for COVID-19 because we interact with people from all health backgrounds.”
The sex workers made the remarks in Nambale Town while celebrating the International Sex Workers’ Rights Day.
They encouraged the government not to look down upon them as they contribute hugely to the economy.
